GET INSPIRED #SewingStevie
This is the first sewing pattern I have ever followed, and it was amazing, I had so much fun and the finished top looks fantastic. I have had a lot of compliments about it, and people are very surprised when I say that I made it, which is all down to the quality of this pattern. The instructions were very clear, and it has given me so much confidence to build on and try something new. My mum (who used to be a dressmaker) was very impressed that this beginner pattern uses interfacing, apparently not many people use it anymore, but it adds a real quality to the finished product. Thank you for helping me to learn a new skill which has given my mental health a real boost, I am so excited to try another pattern!
Hi Anna, your first pattern - amazing!! We’re so glad you loved it and that it gave you the confidence to keep sewing. Extra points for impressing your mum too! We can't wait to hear what you sew next. Abi x
The luella skirt is my second Tilly make. I am new to sewing. I enjoyed the alterations I made, 2 1/2 inch each tier as I'm 5ft, I think the finished result is spot on for my height. I am now think about the alterations for the 3 tier skirt. I would recommend this and the Stevie dress to any beginner. I purchased the stevie add on which should make a nice top for luella skirt.
Love this! Your tier alterations sound perfect for your height, and we’re thrilled you’re enjoying experimenting. Can’t wait to hear how you get on with the 3-tier version! Happy sewing! Abi x
I love the Stevie pattern and wanted to add sleeves so this was great. As a beginner sewist, sleeves intimidate me but this pattern made it easy. I even changed it up to add contrasting cuff edges and some rounded pockets. I am beyond thrilled. Next up is a Stevie with the full skirt. I can't wait!
Hi Sam,
Thank you so much for your lovely review! I’m so happy to hear you loved the Stevie pattern and that the sleeves turned out to be easier than expected – especially with all those fun changes you made like contrasting cuffs and rounded pockets! Can’t wait to see your next Stevie with the full skirt. You’re on a roll!
Happy sewing!

I have some beautiful fabric with a unique design. A friend who visited Africa brought it back for me. The print is large and needed a special pattern, one with the front and back basically on the fold. Stevie was highlighted on Sew Essential, and I thought that it looked promising. I will send a picture when finished. I am in the US and have never ordered on line from another country. It was very easy.
Hey Kathrtyn, so great to read that you found a pattern to match your fabric, I hope it showcases the pattern perfectly. Team Buttons x
I haven’t done any dressmaking in nearly a decade, and had forgotten most of my skills having never been very good at it anyway! Inspired by the Sewing Bee, and having loved Tilly and the Buttons on Instagram for a while, I decided to give it another try. I’ve made two Stevies now: both are impeccable and were quick and satisfying to sew even as a beginner and busy mother, fitting it into evenings here and there. The instructions made it so easy to do a good job even on my very basic machine. I’ve learnt enough to feel confident having a go at more complex pieces now and am so excited to make myself a beautiful handmade wardrobe.
Thank you Kate, it's so great to read comments like yours and yay to handmade wardrobes! x
