Easy to make, with no fiddly bits, Lotta is a perfect dressmaking project for beginners, or a satisfyingly speedy sew for more experienced stitchers. It has a blousy bodice and flared skirt, cinched in with a narrow elasticated waistline.

Choose between knee-length or midi-length skirt, with grown-on short sleeves or bracelet-length drop shoulder sleeves, with optional deep patch pockets. To make it even more versatile, you can make this dress in either woven fabric or stretchy jersey.

Fabric Suggestions

Light- to medium-weight drapey fabrics such as chambray, viscose (rayon), Tencel (lyocell), double gauze, brushed cotton or crêpe. The short
sleeve version can also be made in less drapey fabrics such as linen, cotton lawn, and seersucker.

More experienced? Try single knit drapey jersey, stretch velvet or light-weight French terry.

Versatile dress that is easy for beginners

I used a lightweight cotton and the dress turned out great. I'm not a beginner anymore but I think this would be a straightforward pattern for people early in their sewing journey. I will likely make more in the future.

The perfect project to start 2025

The lotta is an easy to wear, easy to sew and quick to make. I had been pondering this pattern for ages but finally I bit the bullet and am so pleased I did. I made my longer length version in a tencel lawn. Which worked really well. The only negative for me is the skirt is quite full, so I would taper that in slightly next time. I can't wait for my holiday in a few weeks so I can wear it.

Love it!

This pattern is a nice quick sew and so easy to play around with. I’ve made it with inseam pockets instead of patches, played around with patchwork, made the front button-down, and various other things. It’s simple enough that you can be creative with it, but still looks great as is as well!
